The Desire To Succeed And The Will To Do What It Takes

We made a decision some 10 years ago that we would turn our backs on the big beasts of the corporate jungle, where we had spent many successful years as coaches and trainers, specializing in leadership, sales and relationships, and focus our attention on Entrepreneurs and the Owners of Small Businesses.

Why? Because we could see that these entrepreneurs and business owners needed help in the same ways that our large corporate clients had needed help but there was something a lot more enticing about working with them, because:

We decided to work where we KNEW we could make a difference; where the people we worked with would not only listen but would TAKE ACTION, not just today but in the long term.

Where does it all start?

For me it was when I was sitting alone in a classroom at boarding school, catching up on homework, when my English teacher’s head appeared round the door.

‘Fearon, you’re leading for the motion in the next school debate.’

To an extremely shy 16 year old these words brought fear and dread. He could not have brought me more terrifying news.

And yet, two weeks later, as I delivered my first querulous sentences to an audience of some 80 of my peers, I knew there was nothing I wanted more than to spend the rest of my life in front of people, urging, persuading, entertaining and making some kind of a difference to their lives and their thinking.

And so, happily, it has been.

First from school to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). Then nine years spent acting and directing, touring the world, and working with some of the finest actors around.

From the theatre – ‘You’re too tall for television, darling’ – to the directorship of an arts centre project and then to forming a company to train young people with significant learning difficulties for the world of work. (So proud of this, in that we managed to achieve a 70% success rate in getting them into full time employment.)

A six year stint with The Industrial Society followed as I took up the reins of their leadership work in the voluntary sector, working at senior level with Oxfam, Save The Children, The British Red Cross and many more, whilst also heading up their Youth Development Campaign. And what a great organization The Industrial Society was, now sadly gone – but that’s a story for another day.

So, from there to Mercuri International, then the world’s largest sales, marketing and customer services consultancy, where I helped to form the UK’s most successful team.

And now, here I am, having successfully set up four businesses from scratch and spent time on the board of a PLC, sitting on the board of two UK based companies and running The Extraordinary Coaching Company with my lovely wife, Emma.

Doing what? Urging, persuading and bringing change and success to entrepreneurs and the owners of small businesses – work (I’ve got to call it something) that I absolutely love.

Oh, yes, and along the way I became the totally delighted father of six wonderful children (four grown up and out there making their way), co-authored ‘How You Can Talk To Anyone In Everyy Situation’ with Emma and qualified as an NLP Trainer and hypnotherapist.

That’ll be full circle, then.

Emma

I knew from the age of 6 that I wanted to have my own business, and I have always had an independent spirit. There have always been two strands going through my life, business itself (I nearly went into banking – yikes!) and an interest in people.

I chose ‘people’ and took a psychology degree after doing a few stints in the stock exchange and merchant banks. That degree came into its own when I went straight into sales and sales management at Haymarket Publishing – Yes, I was at the coal face, selling advertising space. I spent five years there learning more about people and business than most people do in a lifetime.

From there I went into airport advertising, responsible for millions of pounds of advertising revenue at the three London airports and my last employed job was in a training consultancy, which I loved. I was thrown in at the deep end many times during my time there (in a good way!) and made some long-lasting friendships.

It gave me the oomph to set up on my own and I have never looked back, even through the bumps along the way.

I am the author of 3 published books, “Flying Start, Coaching Your Children for Life”, “Brilliant Parent” and “How You Can Talk To Anyone in Every Situation”.

I am a certified Trainer of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (2003) and a certified NLP coach.

We feel extremely lucky to live and work in the New Forest with our two children, Tom and Hannah, (even though Tim is in constant danger of banging his head on our beams!).
