Don’t or Won’t – Not Can’t
Yesterday I was talking about “bumps in the road” that derail us and stop us reaching our goals.
Actually, that’s the
first thing – goals – a great many small businesses and entrepreneurs lose sight of their goals when they are snowed under. In fact just this week, one of our clients used this particularly graphic metaphor, “When you are surrounded by snapping alligators, it’s hard to remember that your goal was to drain the swamp”.
So the first thing is to revisit your goals and keep them within your sight. Write them down! That may sound basic but it is the simplest of things that we don’t do because we think they are simple and therefore we will remember them.
Quite frankly, if you are running your own business you should write everything down. Stress, good or bad, impairs memory. Have you ever woken up thinking “I’ve got so much to do I don’t know where to start”?
We used to, all the time. And I will tell you why. We don’t like planning. We like creating, having ideas, talking to people, being with clients. We don’t like sitting down together regularly to PLAN.
And that was the biggest block to our success.
We knew that we had to do it and we didn’t, because it was such a big bump in the road. And we didn’t REALLY believe it would make that much difference.
What nonsense!
You see, most people lack the success they could have because of what they DON’T or WON’T do, not because of what they CAN’T do. So make a decision to do some of the things that you haven’t been doing but know would make a difference if you did . Decide and make the move to do it.
We plan everything now, and it shows in our productivity and our bank account.
And do you know…..we even quite like it!
